Last month when I was in LA I had the chance to do a voice session in one of Disney recording studios. This my second or third time doing this and lets just say I am not getting any better. It was fun though. I did learn that it may take the talent up 50-60s times reading the line before they get it right, thankfully no one has ever given up. In some cases, they have even tweaked the line for the talent making several different small changes helping he talent make the line their own.
We met with Zootopia’s Dialogue Mixer Paul McGrath who gave us the run down of how the recording studio works. Basically the talents comes in and reads the line to the part they are playing. Doing the voice overs are very hard and they have a hours and hours of scrap material. Sometime though the scraped material can be used in the bonus section of the Blu-rays as the bloopers. Sometimes if the talents make a mistake it actually works and they occasionally will add it into the movie.
While I was in the recording studio with my small group, we had 30 minutes of deep belly laughing going on. It is fun and funny to watch each of take a turn in the clip above. The clip above is mine. I did it able 7 times before I finally got a workable piece. Trust me it is harder than you may think. Thankfully, Paul gave all of us great tips to make our line better. This was probably my favorite part of the spend at the Zootopia Press day.
