We all want good things for our kids, and one of the major ones I hear about a lot is fostering their creativity. This is certainly a good quality to encourage, but I think a lot of parents go about it the wrong way. Some of us forget that play in general is a creative activity, so here are a few games to foster that creative spark in your kid.
First of all, the good-old improvised band. I don’t know how much this actually contributes to serious musical skill. However, I’m sure it stimulates some kind of creative nerve in your kid. Don’t be one of those uptight parents who turns their child into a little Mozart by forcing them into hours of piano lessons. Instead, get out the pots, pans and kazoos and let them have at it! The noise might get a little irritating, but try to join in if you start feeling the twinge. I’m sure they’ll be overjoyed that mommy’s taking an interest!
If you’re way too busy to have this kind of racket going on in the home, there are still several other things you can do to encourage your child’s creativity. Colouring by numbers is a simple and Cheap way to get your kids thinking creatively. They’ll be content to sit quietly at a table and work on their pictures, and will feel great in how easy it is to create some great-looking designs. There are many sites where you can print off colouring by numbers sheets for kids. Just make sure you stock up on printer ink; your kids might go crazy for it!
Fostering creativity in your kid is a great thing to do, but you may feel it eats into the time for some of the other important things. Getting some exercise in is always important. However, you can also foster creativity while you’re at it. Go for a simple walk around the block, but try to get your kids looking at the world through fresh eyes. Point out anything and everything, asking open questions. “Where’s that birdie off too? How did that seashell get there? How old is that tree?” the answers you’ll get should be nothing short of wonderful!
Finally, playing dress-up. If you never got to do this when you were a kid, then you’ve been missing out on a lot! I’m sure you’ve got a few unsightly bits of clothes in your wardrobe that could be part of some fantastical setting. Perhaps you had some hideous muumuu for when you were pregnant with your kids? Maybe you can still fit into that 80s gym wear and be just about passable as a superhero. Obviously, your kids are in charge so you may end up in something even more ridiculous! Let their imagination run wild, and go with whatever they say. Just remember what you’re wearing before you go to answer the door!
There you have just a few ways you can foster a child’s creativity. I’m sure you’ll help out your own creative juices in the process!
