I can’t imagine anyone wants to spend their summer slaving away over the stove. Hearty dishes such as soups, casseroles, and stews may be great through winter. However, cooking and eating them now in hot weather is not very appealing. So now that June is well underway, it’s time to switch to a summer menu! Meals on hot days should be light and nutritious. Not only that but it also pays off if you can enjoy them outside in all the good weather! So if you are ready for some al fresco dining, here are my favorite foods for enjoying out in the garden.
Barbecues are a family favorite in the summer months. They are super easy to use. Simply fire up the grill and place your meat on to cook. It isn’t just meat that can be done on the BBQ; you can also grill vegetables and even fish. You’ll find lots of fantastic recipes on the Internet, including on sites like Fire Food Chef. It is important to also serve some other side dishes along with all the barbecued food. Fresh salads and bread and dips can go down really well with all that tasty meat!
Bored of barbecues? It’s understandable; after all, many people have them regularly through summer. There is one alternative that is just as good – smoking food! You can buy smoking ovens in most garden stores. They look like barbecues but instead of cooking your meat on a grill, they smoke it to give it a fantastic flavor! If you get really into your smoking, you could even get a builder to install a permanent brick smoking oven into your garden! All meats can be smoked and preserved using this method of cooking. However, it is not suitable for preparing vegetables.
You don’t always have to prepare your food outside! If you get fed up of all the barbecuing, you can start cooking back in your kitchen and simply taking the food out to your garden. Platters are very convenient if you start doing this. They are basically big plates covered in various finger foods. As everything will fit on one or two large plates or platters, you won’t have to carry too much stuff with you. You can put anything at all on platters. Spread neatly cut fruit or open sandwiches on them. They are great if you just fancy a snack as everyone can just help themselves to whatever is on the platter whenever they like.
Crudités are French appetizers traditionally served to guests as something to nibble on before a meal. These days, they have become extremely popular in the English-speaking world. They are eaten at many parties and also appear on many restaurant menus. Why are they great garden food? Well, it’s because they are a very light meal and won’t weigh too heavy on your stomach when you are busy sunbathing! Crudités are always made up of raw vegetables and a dip. Popular veggies that are often used include carrots, cucumbers, and red and yellow peppers. As for the dip, you can use whichever is your favorite. Hummus is very popular, though not traditionally French. If you want to stick to the dish’s French roots, go for a vinaigrette or yogurt dip.
Bread And Olive Oil
Another amazing snack for when you are relaxing in the garden, crusty bread dipped in olive oil is an Italian favorite. All you need to do is break off some bread and dip it into olive oil for an unmistakable taste of Italy. If the weather is nice, you may start daydreaming you’re on a beach in the Mediterranean! One thing to remember is that you need to use extra-virgin olive oil. Add a splash of balsamic vinegar for a splash of color. This will taste great alongside some olives. Green or black, it doesn’t matter too much – just go with the ones you think taste best! To really indulge, enjoy this delicious snack with a nice glass of Italian white wine. Sounds like the perfect way to spend a hot summer’s evening!
So next time the sun is shining, take the family out to the garden and get the kids to set your patio table while you carry all the food and drink outside. You could even invite all your friends and family over for an outdoor dinner party. Sun, great food, and having fun with all your loved ones; what more could you want?!
